The Corrib is Galway's greatest treasure, and as such we should all be up in arms at what has happened. We have all played a part in its pollution by not backing the Corrib Anglers, now we are paying the price in spades. If the outrage people feel now does not continue until proper sewage treatment plants are put in place all over the county we will have lost the battle to protect her.

I am appalled by the way this crisis has been handled. Where is the city? What are they doing to inform residents about how to properly boil water? Do we bring it to a boil and stop?, boil for 5 minutes?, 10? Why aren't businesses required to give free treated water with a meal instead spending 2 EUR on fancy sparkling water? Why are we still paying VAT on bottled water in stores? Better yet, why isn't the city/state providing free potable water to every resident??? This makes it extremely difficult for me to uphold my personal boycott on bottled water.

Why do the canals and river have rubbish piled high and nothing is ever done to clean them up or even enforce the littering laws to begin with? If I remember correctly, there is a 1900 EUR fine for littering, is anyone ever served a ticket or fine? Why have a fine if it is not going to be enforced? It might as well be 1 million if the government aren't going to enforce it and protect our environment. I'm embarrased for Ireland when my family come to visit and they see the bottom of the canals, dried up from the beautiful weather lately, to find cans, bottles, trolleys, who knows what else down there. Doesn't anyone have respect for this beautiful country?

The government aren't the only ones to blame in this crisis...
